Lamu Sunset

Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa. Its narrow streets, carved wooden doors, and rooftop terraces create an atmosphere that feels suspended in time.

The Wedding

Amina and Omar chose Lamu for its personal significance — where they first met, at a cultural festival three years prior. The ceremony blended Swahili tradition with contemporary touches. Henna, jasmine, and the sound of taarab music drifting across the water.

The reception was held on a rooftop overlooking the channel. As the sun set, the sky turned from gold to rose to deep violet. The call to prayer echoed from the old mosque below. It was, without question, the most beautiful wedding I’ve photographed.

The Island Light

Lamu’s proximity to the equator gives it a unique quality of light. The sun rises and sets almost vertically, creating short but intense golden hours. The coral stone buildings glow warm at dawn and cool at dusk — a photographer’s dream.
