Diani Beach fishing dhows at dawn

Diani Coast

Diani Beach stretches 17 kilometers along Kenya’s south coast. The sand is white, the water turquoise, and the coral reef just offshore creates calm, warm lagoons ideal for portrait work.

The Fishing Village

Past the resorts, south of the main beach, a Digo fishing community launches wooden dhows at dawn. They’ve sailed these waters for centuries, navigating by stars and currents. The boats are built without plans — shapes passed from father to son through practice.

I arrived before sunrise and stayed through the morning catch. The fishermen were generous with their time, explaining their nets and techniques while I worked around them.

Underwater

The reef at Diani is recovering. After years of bleaching and overfishing, marine conservation efforts are showing results. Coral is regrowing, fish populations are rebounding. The underwater images here tell a story of resilience.
